WWI FP Memory of Alexander Lugon

This 2019 post below was sent in by Caroline Smith who was not an FP but her grandfather and children were.
"My paternal grandfather, Alexander Drysdale Lugon, attended Boroughmuir between about 1908 and 1914. He started university but in November 1914 he joined the British Army and went to fight in France. In 1916 he was in the Machine Gun Corps and was involved in the advance on 1 July, the first day of the Battle of the Somme. During the fighting he was struck in the chest by a piece of exploded shrapnel shell and only survived because the shell fragment became embedded in a small bible which he always carried in his left breast pocket. He later wrote to the minister at his local church explaining how the bible had saved his life.
After the war my grandfather returned to his life in Edinburgh and played for the Boroughmuir (FP) rugby team in 1920/1921. He became a teacher and later a headmaster at various schools in Fife. He never talked about his wartime experiences.
I attach a copy of my grandfather's letter to the minister in 1916 and a photo of the bible containing the shrapnel fragment.
The actual bible is with my brother in Surrey. I also attach a photo of my grandfather when he signed up, in training for the Machine Gun Corps and of him in the FP rugby team.
Kind regards
Caroline Smith"
